James Hales body is being lowered over the side clad in armour. the kneeling figure of James Hales's widow Alice below, with the family estate in the Stour valley shown in the background. Notes: Sir James Hales was Treasurer of the 1589 expedition to Cadiz-a reprisal for the Spanish Armada and died on the voyage back. The memorial was erected by Alice Hales' second husband Richard Lee d. 1608, Ambassador to Russia. Lee claimed part of the Hales estate, a claim contested by the children of James Hales's brother.
