'Sacred to the memory / of / Sir Thomas Slade Knt / late Surveyor of his Majesty's Royal / Navy; / which important Office / for almost sixteen years / he filled / with honour to himself, & advantage / to the publick. / He had constantly in view / the improvement / of the King's Yard, & the English Navy, / which great end / he steadily pursued / with unwearied application, & spotless integrity / In the more endearing scenes / of private life / He was an affectionate husband, an indulgent / father, a steady friend, & an honest man. / He died at Bath, 22 Feb. 1771, / in the 68th year of his age'

A RESIDENT OF THIS VILLAGE HE WAS THE ELDER SON OF SHULDHAM PEARD ESQ REAR ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE AND DIED IN LONDON ON THE 16TH FEBRUARY 1837 AGED 44. THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND AND THE DEAD SHALL BE RAISED INCORRUPTABLE. HERE ALSO RESTS HIS WIDOW FRANCES COOKE PEARD WHO DIED AT TORQUAY THE 11TH MARCH 1895 AGED 90. 'S.M. of Sir John Hill, Kt., Rear Admiral of the White Squadron, Captain of Sandown Castle, ob. 20 Jan.,1855, aged 81 yrs. He was first lieut. of the 'Minotaur' in the battle of the Nile in 1798. Served with the army in Egypt under Gen. Sir R. Abercrombie in 1801. employed more than 60 yrs. in the military and civil departments of the Royal Navy until promoted to the rank of Flag Officer; during which he attracted the notice and gained the esteem of F.M. Duke of Wellington. Conspicuous for indefatigable zeal, and activity, his valuable services were on several occasions acknowledged and honoured by his sovereign's approbation'

Whilst he was anxious to afford some glorious example of his activity, his valour & his love for his Country, and attract the esteem of his Noble Commander, this excellent Youth was (oh! doleful to Relate) suddenly snatched away by Death, in the flower of his age, to the unspeakable grief of his friends- he was a youth of superior parts, and from his most tender years had an insatiable thirst for glory, indeed he greatly excelled others in this gift of Nature-He died the 7th of June, in the 24th year of his Age, anno Dom 1665'
