'Sir Andrew Snape Hamond Bt. of Hamond Lodge in this parish, captain in the Royal Navy, an elder brother of the Trinity House, and twice MP for the borough of Ipswich, who was born at Greenwich in Kent on the 17th Dec 1738. At the age of fourteen he entered the Naval Service and after signalising himself in various parts of the globe, but particularly so by his gallantry and activity while commanding His Majesty's ship ROEBUCK during the contest with America from 1775 to 1780, he became Lieutenant Governor of NOVA SCOTIA which post he relinquished at the end of 1782 to the deep regret of all the inhabitants of that province. In 1785 he was appointed Commodore and Commander in Chief in the River Medway and in 1794 he became Comptroller of his Majesty's navy, the duties of which honorable and laborious office he executed with great perseverance and distinguished ability until 1806 during a period of most arduous war with France and Spain, when retiring from public life in consequence of impaired health he found a residence in this neighbourhood, where beloved and respected by all, he continued to perform with kindness and benevolence the duties of an active magistrate, of an affectionate father and friend until his departure from this life on the 12th September 1828, universally regretted, having nearly attained the venerable age of 90 years. His character for piety, integrity, suavity of manners extraordinary memory and all intellectual endowments was of the first order and 'he doth to his descendants leave / the first best gift that man can claim / Better than pomp by crowds adored / or gold immeasurably stored / a pure and spotless name' PARATUS ET FIDELIS'
