'SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / DAME MARY BALL / WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON THE 28TH SEPTEMBER 1832 / IN THE 85TH YEAR OF HER AGE / HER REMAINS ARE DEPOSITED IN THE CHANCEL / SHE WAS THE WIDOW OF SIR ALEXANDER BALL BART / CAPTAIN OF H.M. SHIP ALEXANDER / IN THE VICTORY OF THE NILE / AND AFTERWARDS / REAR ADMIRAL OF H.M. RED SQUADRON / AND / GOVERNOR OF THE ISLAND OF MALTA / WHERE HE ENDED AN ACTIVE AND HONOURABLE LIFE / ON THE 25TH OCTOBER 1809 / AGED 52 / THE REMAINS OF ALEXANDER BALL WERE HONOURED / BY A PUBLIC FUNERAL / AND A SPLENDID MAUSOLEUM HAS BEEN RAISED / BY THE MALTESE NATION / TO RECORD THE EMINENT SERVICES RENDERED BY HIM / TO THEIR COUNTRY.'
