'Sacred / to the memory of / Hyde John Clarke Esqr / Formerly of Hyde Hall afterwards of Llangollen / A captain of the Royal Navy and one / of her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, / Who departed this life at Oswestry on the 25th[?] day of November AD 1857 aged 80 years / He came to this his last abiding place / full of piety and full of days / In the various relations of life he was most exemplary. He was eminent alike for / his private virtue and his public services / and now he rests from his labours / and his works do follow him.'
