'This tablet / is intended to record / the death of / KENELM CHANDLER ESQr / of His Majesty's civil service / in the Island of Ceylon, / which happened by shipwreck, / in the Indian Ocean / in the year 1809, / aged 34 years. / On a handsome tribute of respect / presented by his Brother Officers / he is described as / "A Character of invariable integrity / and benevolence" / ALSO is inscribed to the memory of his Father / CHARLES EDWARD CHANDLER ESQr / of this Borough,/ who died on the 18th December 1833, / in the 87th year of his age./ AND, of Mary, wife of the above named / CHARLES EDWARD CHANDLER / who died on the 6th of August 1827 / in the 77th year of her age.'
