'SACRED / to the memory of / the Revd Hownam. B. Illingworth, BA, Late Chaplain of HMS Madagascar, / and afterwards Colonial Chaplain at Sierra Leone, / who was drowned by the upsetting / of his boat in Sierra Leone River / on the 4th July 1844 aged 27 years [...] He was a warm and constant friend, / an accomplished scholar, / and a faithful minister of the gospel. / This tablet is erected by his messmates in the / Madagascar, / in testimony of their profound respect / for his memory, / and the many virtues and aimiabilities / which adorned his character.'
