ST GEORGE, WHO DIED AT THE / ROYAL NAVAL HOSPITAL HASLAR 1ST JUNE 1855 / ELDEST SON OF JOHN BIRTWHISTLE ESQRE / DEPTY LIEUT. FOR THE STEWARTRY OF KIRKCUDBRIGHT N.B. / AND MARTHA MARIA HIS WIFE. / HE SERVED WITH DISTINCTION THROUGH THE CHINESE WAR AND IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD / & RECEIVED A MEDAL FROM THE ROYAL HUMANE / SOCIETY FOR HIS GALLANTRY IN SAVING LIVES OF SEAMEN.'

Description: Marble on a slate base. A foul anchor above the inscription tablet, below, crossed flags with a wreath in the centre which bears Birtwhistle's Royal Humane Society Medal and China War Medal. Supported by brackets, three grenades below each bracket.
