'Here are deposited the remains of / Capt. William Warden / who died in command of his Majesty's / ship ' Rattlesnake' in the Bay of Bengal, on the 5th June 1807, aged 28 years. / To commemorate the private worth and professional / merits of the promising officer, this / Monument is erected by his Commander-in-Chief / as a tribute of regard to his memory.'
