'Sacred to the Memory of / Mr Philip Butticax; / late Chief Officer of the 'Hugh Inglis', / he departed this life / the 8th day of December 1803 aged 27 / He was a most deserving officer / and beloved by all who knew him. / This Monument was erected / by his friend and shipmate Capt. Franklin / by desire of his most esteemed friend and protec / tor, Mr Leith of Harrow in England.'
