'Beneath this stone are deposited the remains / of Captain John White / late Commander of the Hon. Company's ship 'Earl of Oxford' / in which ship he was 35 years; / he departed this life 10th October 1789, / in the 47th year of his age; / after a long and tedious illness / which he bore with christian fortitude. / He lived respected and esteemed by all / who knew him, and died universally lamented by all his friends.'
