'In memory of / Charles Taylor, Esq. / Surgeon in the Royal Navy; son of / John and Elizabeth Taylor, / of Stanton in this parish: / being appointed / Surgeon, Mineralogist, and Botanist / to the first Sierra Leone Company / he travelled through various parts / of Africa / in search of knowledge; / and returned in MDCCXCII/ amply rewarded, / to his native country, / which he continued to serve / with fidelity / to the day of his death, / the XXVIII of November MDCCCXVIII, in the LVI year of his age.'
