'In a vault near this place / are deposited the mortal remains of / Peter Hunt Esq. / Captain in His Majesty's Royal Navy / He commenced his naval career as a midshipman / on board HMS Barfleur in the year 1782 / and was present at the action of the glorious 12th of April; / and ended his valuable life in this town / December 4th 1824 aged 61 years. / As a man upright and benevolent / as a friend faithful and generous / he lived respected and died lamented / of his affection as a husband / this monument is a humble memorial / erected as a tribute to his worth / and a solace to her own grief / by his afflicted widow / to whose memory these few lines are added / by her affectionate nephew. / Mary Stuart Hunt widow of the above Capt. Peter Hunt RN / died at Cheltenham on the 4th June 1837 / aged 76 years / her remains rest in the same vault as those of her husband'
