'IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF / JOHN ADAMS / WHO DIED AT HOLY ISLAND ON A VISIT / 5TH AUGUST 1875, AGED 67 YEARS / ALSO / MARY HIS WIFE WHO DIED 30TH JUNE / 1856 AGED 49 YEARS AND IS INTERRED IN CHRIST CHURCH YARD NORTH SHIELDS / I LEFT MY HOME IN [ROBUST] HEALTH / I LITTLE THOUGHT OF DEATH SO NIGH / BUT GOD THOUGHT FIT TO CALL ME HOME / AND WITH HIS WILL MUST COMPLY / WEEP NOT FOR ME MY CHILDREN DEAR / WITH YOU I LONG TO STAY / YOUR TIME ON EARTH WILL NOT BE LONG / PREPARE TO FOLLOW ME'
