Details

Description: Rectangular brass plaque with semi-circular apron and wooden mount. Lettering incised and colour-filled in black and red within a black border with an outer border of green leaves between red fillets. On the apron, framed by two acanthus leaves with a shell in the centre, a view of two brigs off a coast. Within the entrance of a waterway on the left, a canal barge with a steersman.

Notes: The porch erected as a memorial to Richard Coates. He was the assistant to John Rennie in the construction of the Chelmsford and Blackwater Navigation and afterwards resident engineer of the project. He founded a school at Springfield in 1814. DOSSIER.
