'MEMENTO MORI / SACRED / To the Memory of / JOHN RALPH MOSS / Commander / of / His Majesty's Sloop / MERLIN / Who Died the 24th Aug't 1799 / Aged 40 Years / On Board the said sloop / in this Bay / upon his Return to JAMAICA / after having Defeated / a Spanish Armament / of Sloop Schooner, Gunboat / with 2000 Land Forces / Destin'd for the Reduction of / The Logwood Cutters in the / BAY of HONDURAS.'

Description: Arched top with an engraved skull and cross bones above inscription (also engraved). Holes to nail the copper plate to the headboard round the edges.
