Transcript

[Translation of latin inscription on central panel] 'Although this statue of the venerable man is silent / Learn, O Reader and Beholder who he was, / A famous merchant, a successful voyager through / Many seas, seeking rather the glory of his country / And the relief of the poor than thirsting for / The accumulation of hoards of wealth. / And therefore, by the will of God / He became richer, an exemplary chief Magistrate of the city / Full of honour and fidelity, serving Christ and God / according to the teaching of the church of England / (which was dear to his heart), he closed his life in peace / and now enjoys eternal peace beyond the stars'

Details

Description: Free standing figures on top of the monument and the arms of the merchant venturers, kneeling effigies of Aldworth and his wife in arched niches below. On the base of the memorial are three ships, three tuns representing a trader in rum, a merchants mark and five sugar loaves for a sugar boiler.
