'Sacred to the memory of Captain Charles Alder RN sixth son of the late Gilbert Alder Died the 16th Nov 1903 at Ham House West Buckland Somerset aged 62 years. The deceased Officer served in the Russian War 1854-55 and in 1857-8, 60 in the Second China War and was present at the Storming of the Taku Forts the blockade of the Pei-ho River and the Capture of Canton also in the Congo River Expedition and in the suppression of the slave trade on the West Coast of Africa.'
