'Near this place are laid / the Remains of / SMITH CALLIS Esqr / Rear Admiral of the Blue / from his earliest youth / train'd to the service of the Sea / In every Station / and in every Instance of Tryal / (many of the utmost Danger) / his Steady Courage / prevailed often with Success / always with geat Applause / But his intrepid Conduct / at ST TROPEZ / received a peculiar Distinction / more lasting than Marble / from his Sovereign's Hand / The Greatness of his King / and the Love of his Country / were the prevailing passions / of his Mind / In his Life and Manners / He was Serious, Humane, Liberal, Friendly / and of Strict Integrity / This truly brave Commander / feared nothing but / to do an unbecoming Action / He died / Octo: 16: MDCCLXI / In the 52nd Year / of his Age'
