'Sacred to the Memory of / ALAN LORD GARDNER / Admiral of the Red Squadron / of his Majesty's Fleet / and Major General of the Marine Forces / whose remains / lie interred in a Vault near this Place / His Lordship departed this Life / the 31st of December 1808 Aet. 66. / Having relinquished the important Command / of the Channel Fleet / in the month of May preceding / with a Constitution / worn out in the Service of his Country / for his long and meritorious Services / (which the ample page of History has recorded) / He was raised in the year 1806 / to the dignity of the British Peerage / The post of / Major General of Marine Forces / was also purposely created and bestowed on him / by his most Gracious Sovereign / for the very distinguished part / he took in the ever Memorable Battle / of the 1st June 1794 / His Lordship's Family / the Profession / to which he had the honor to belong / and his numerous Friends, / will long lament / His Loss.'
