Details
Description: Effigy in armour on tomb chest, believed to be that of Gervase Alard, who was Admiral of the Western Fleet appointed by Edward I. The effigy is of stone in complete armour. The hands are raised and enclose a heart. A lion crouches at the feet. The figure was originally painted and had decorations on the surcoat. There is no shield, but the mutilated remains of two large angels may be traced supporting the double cushion on which the head rests, slightly turned towards the church. The main gablet of the recessed canopy springs from the heads of King Edward and his second wife, Queen Margaret.
