'Captain John Smith who was baptized in this church on 9th January 1579 (19 Jan 1580 old style) He was first among the leaders of the settlement of Jamestown Virginia in 1607 which began the expansion overseas of the English speaking peoples The Commonwealth of Virginia the United States of America and the British Commonwealth of Nations. Erected 1960 by the Jamestown Foundation of the Commonwealth of Virginia'
