'In loving memory of Lieutenant Commander Edgar Christopher Cookson V.C. D.S.O. R.N. of H.M.S. Clio. Killed in action Sept 28th 1915 aged 31. He was shot down while endeavouring single-handed to destroy with an axe the boom placed by the enemy across the River Tigris near Kut el Amara for this act of conspicuous gallantry H.M. King George V conferred on him the Victoria Cross. From his childhood he knew and loved the church. Fitting that his name should be commemorated on these walls'
