'This stone was erected by the / Seafaring Friendly Society / At Emsworth / To the Memory of / EDWARD HAWK jun / who was drown'd in / Emsworth Harbour / by his boat oversetting / on the 7th of October 1796 / Aged 26 years / When jarring Elements my Boat asailed / All strength was feeble and all efforts failed / So now beware dear friends what course you stere / And think upon the dust that slumber [here]'
