'In loving memory of Mr Richard Meehan, Native of the city of Limerick, who died in Guernsey 27 October 1842 aged 76 years. Mr Meehan spent the greater part of his life in the British Navy and was gunner on H.M. Frigate Shannon at the time this vessel engaged and captured the United States Frigate Chesapeake on the [1 June 1813]. His behaviour on that glorious occasion and his general conduct were so highly estimated by Captain Brooke and the officers of the Shannon that they presented him with a silver tea service. Mr Meehan had resided upward of 25 years in this island and was higly respected by all classes. This tribute was erected by public subscription'
