Rear Admiral Ernest Spooner and Air Vice-Marshal Conway Pulford and 40 others were stranded on the island during the evacuation of Singapore in 1942. Spooner and Pulford died of malaria and exhaustion. Spooner has a Commonwealth War Grave memorial at Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.
