‘SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / CAPTAIN BIRD ALLEN R.N. / WHO IN THE 38TH YEAR OF HIS AGE / DIED AT FERNANDO PO THE 25TH OCTR. 1841 / WHILE IN COMMAND OF H.M.S. SOUDAN / ON AN EXPEDITION INTO THE INTERIOR OF / AFRICA. / DESIGNED TO PROMOTE THE INTRODUCTION OF CHRISTIANITY AND CIVILISATION / INTO THAT COUNTRY; HIS FRIENDS HAVE ERECTED THIS TABLET / TO RECORD THEIR STRONG SENSE OF HIS CHRISTIAN EXCELLENCE AND / PROFESSIONAL TALENTS, AND TO TESTIFY THEIR DEEP REGRET FOR HIS LOSS / AND THAT OF HIS BRAVE COMPANIONS WHO WITH HIM / FELL VICTIMS TO THE CLIMATE OF THE RIVER NIGER. / MARK THE PERFECT MAN, AND BEHOLD THE UPRIGHT: / FOR THE END OF THAT MAN IS PEACE.
