'The brave but unfortunate Philip de Saumarez Esq. (son of Matthew de Saumarez Esq. of the Island of Guernsey by Ann Durell his wife) commander of His Majesties ship NOTTINGHAM, who acquired glory to his country by his death, being slain in the sea fight when the French were defeated on the 14th October 1747, ordered this monument to be raised in memory of this lady, his aunt from a love of her virtues, gratitude for favours and sorrow for her death'
