‘IN LOVING MEMORY OF / HENRY MERITON ESQRE. / WHOSE REMAINS TOGETHER WITH THOSE OF / HIS MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER / REST IN THE VAULT BENEATH THIS CHURCH / HE SERVED THE HONOURABLE EAST INDIA COMPANY / IN VARIOUS APPOINTMENTS / WITH DISTINGUISHED ZEAL, ACTIVITY AND FIDELITY / FOR MORE THAN FORTY YEARS / AND DURING THE LAST FOURTEEN / FILLED THE IMPORTANT OFFICE OF / SUPERINTENDANT OF THEIR MARINE AT BOMBAY / FROM WHENCE HAVING RETURNED / IN THE MONTH OF APRIL 1826 / HE DIED THE SEVENTH OF THE SUCCEEDING AUGUST / AGED FIFTY FOUR YEARS / ALSO OF HIS BROTHER / WALTER ALLEN MERITON, ESQRE. / WHO DIED THE 31ST OF AUGUST 1853 AGED 88 YEARS.’
