[East side] 'The fountain was erected by public subscription in the year 1878 in memory of the 17 parishioners who perished in the Cospatrick by fire on her voyage to New Zealand Nov. 17 1874. This plate was affixed as a memento of the coronation of King Edward VII' [South side] 'Henry Townsend aged 62, Ann his wife aged 53, George Charter aged 31, Jane Townsend his wife aged 35 and their two children, Henry Hedges aged 30, Mary Townsend his wife aged 30 and their three children' [North side] 'Richard Hedges aged 56, Sarah his wife aged 53, John Hedges aged 24, Sarah his wife aged 22, Thomas Hedges aged 27, Charles Hedges aged 18 sons of Richard and Sarah Hedges', 'The tree opposite was planted by Mrs K Wiggins and commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Cospatrick disaster' [West side] John Ch. IV Verse 13 & 14'
