Notes: 'One of the four masters of the Royal Navy. Principal masters of the Navy were established in the reign of Elizabeth I and initially were employed only at Chatham. About 1635 they were called Masters Attendant as they attended quarterly in rotation, to oversee the boatswains and shopkeepers and to ensure that the ships were properly rigged and fitted and sailed safely in and out of harbour. The four masters were the only officers of the Navy who had specific places in coronation and other royal processions.'
