'Near this Place / lies the Body of PAUL STIGANT. HE / Serv'd ye CROWN in Quality of Mar. Carpenter / of Several Ships & Builders Assistant of His Maj’ies / yard of CHATHAM & Mar. Builder at Portmahon / HARWICH & SHEERNESS In which Last HE / Died 15 of Oct. 1717 Aet 58 Univarsally [sic] Lament’d / By his Superiors as an Useful Officer by His Equals as a Worthy Neighbour, the Poor as A / Bountiful House Keeper: by his own Family as a / tender Husband & an Indulgent Father, he Married / Mary, the Daughter of ELEXR. HAMOND in the county of KENT Gent, by Whom HE / has Issue one Son & two Daughters John / Elizth & Anne. His Afflicted WIDOW / Raised this Monument to His Memory / Also / The Body of CAPTAIN / JOHN STIGANT / His Son, Who Died the 5th of March / 1719 / Aged 31 Years'
