Notes: Entered RN at 14. Cadet during Kaffir War of 1850 in HMS 'Castor'. Part of Naval brigade from HMS 'Pelorus'. In NZ War, 1st Lieut of 'Bombay' burnt out off Montevideo, Promoted Capt. 1870, commanded HMS 'Achilles' during Egyptian War of 1882. He died of syncope resulting from an aneurism of the heart which had lain dormant since severe rheumatic fever constracted from exposure at the burning of the 'Bombay'.
