'Here rest the remains of Robert Lidgett, out pensioner of Greenwich Hospital who died 4.5.1840 aged 70 years having served in the British Navy for a period of nearly 30 years. During which he bravely fought at Tenerife, Copenhagen and St Vincent. He returned to his native village and faithfully employed the remaining 26 years of his life in the service of those by whom this memorial is erected'
