Details

Description: Within an architectural surround, a half-length figure of Savile, holding a book, his shield of arms behind. He is flanked by two figures on each side - representing Euclid, Ptolomy, Tacitus and St John Chrysostom. Two putti and Fame are placed at the top of the monument. Painted views of Merton College and Eton - institutions over which Savile presided, flank the inscription. Below it is a painted globe showing the southern hemisphere, with the route of Magellan's voyage.

Notes: Savile founded two chairs at Oxford - Astronomy (Ptolomy) and Geometry (Euclid). Savile also studied the four authors depicted.
