Notes: Born 1769. Officer in First Fleet to Australia. Killed in action to capture Guadaloupe Jan-Feb 1810. Buried Basse Terre Cemetery, Guadaloupe. Lt RN John Shortland Snr 1737-1810, buried at Lille, France. The fountain was erected to commemorate the centenary of Shorland's landing on the site of Newcastle, and was late moved from Newcastle beach.
