'...Also are interred the remains of the above named John Gyles a native of Margate who departed this life the 28th May 1825 in the 90th year of his age. He served under Admiral Hawke in the year 1747 and was appointed Gunner in his Majesty's ship 'Guernsey' in the year 1758 and after retiring from active service in the Navy was 32 years a commissioner of salvage at this port'
