'NEAR THIS PLACE ARE LAID THE REMAINS OF / VICE-ADMIRAL SIR SAMUEL HOOD, / KNIGHT OF THE BATH AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF / HIS BRITANNIC MAJESTY'S SHIPS IN THE EAST INDIES / AN OFFICER OF DISTINGUISHED MERIT, WHOSE GREAT PUBLIC SERVICES / WILL LIVE IN THE ANNALS OF HIS COUNTRY / BUT IN THE AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF HIS FRIENDS WERE LOST IN THE RECOLLECTION OF / HIS PRIVATE VIRTUES.'
