'H.S.E. / JOHANNES BURRARD Armiger, / In Agro Hantoniensi subpraeses regius, / Pacis custos peditum pro-tribunus, / Et marium vice-praefectus, / Qui postquam per Viginti succedentes annos / Municipii hujusce parsonam in comitijus sustinuisset, / (Magnis illis muneribus fideliter functus / Pluribus et majoribus idoneus,) / obijt, die mensis Maij 14: / Anno Dni:1698. et aetat: suae 52: / In cujus piam memoriam / Domina ALICIA uxor charissima, EDVARDI HERBERT Baronis de Cherburg / Et Castelli insula apud Hibernos filia / monumentrum hoc / Tanquam pignus fidissimi amoris / Posuit' [Translation] 'H.S.E. John Burrard Esqre, royal 'Subpraeces' of Hampshire, Guardian of the Peace, Officer of Infantry, Vice-Prefect of the Seas, who for twenty years represented this town in Parliament (having performed faithfully those great offices, worthy of more and greater things) died 14th May 1698 aged 52. In pious memory of whom, Lady Alice, his most affectionate wife, daughter of Edward Herbert, Baron of Chirbury and of Castle Island in Ireland placed this monument as a pledge of her most loyal love'
