‘SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / JOHN PEYTON ESQRE. / A REAR ADMIRAL OF THE RED SQUADRON / OF HIS MAJESTY’S FLEET. / HE DEPARTED THIS LIFE / AUGUST 2ND A.D. 1809 / AGED 56 YEARS. / HE COMMANDED HIS MAJESTY’S SLOOP THE DEFENCE, OF 74 GUNS, / AT THE EVER MEMORABLE BATTLE OF THE NILE, / ON THE IST OF AUGUST 1798, AND WAS CONSIDERED WITH / ESTEEM AND RESPECT, ON THAT, AS ON ALL OTHER OCCASSIONS / AN HONOUR TO THE PROFESSION TO WHICH HE BELONGED. / LET THOSE WHO KNEW HIM BEST, SPEAK ALL THAT HE WAS, / IN THE DIFFERENT RELATIONS OF DOMESTIC LIFE! / HOW BELOVED, HOW RESPECTED, BY THOSE MOST INTIMATELY / CONNECTED WITH HIM.
