'Sacred / to the memory of/Lieut William Rivers RN, / who died / on the 5th December 1856 / aged 68 / he was / 50 years a Lieutenant in the / Royal Navy / served in three engagements and / lost his leg on board HMS Victory / at Trafalgar / was the first adjutant appointed to / Greenwich Hospital / the duties of which office he / faithfully performed / for 27 years / also of/Emma and Elizabeth Clay / daughters of the above / who died at Greenwich Hospital / the former on the 10th December 1828 / and the latter / on the 16th March 1831 / Both aged 13 years'
