'Memoriae Sacrum / John Eldred / New Buckingham in Norfolk was his first / Being In Babilon Hee spent some parte / of his time, and the rest of his earthly / pilgrimage hee spent in London and was / Alderman of that Famous Cittie / His Age LXXX / His Death / The Holy Land so called I have Seene / And in the land of Babilon have Bene / But in the Land where Glorious Saints doe live / My Soule doth crave of Christ a Roome to give / And There with Holy Angells Halliluiah's Singe / With Joyfull Voyce too God our Heavenly King / No content but in The O Lord’

Notes: English traveller and merchant. Eldred’s ‘Journal of his Voyage to Tripoli and Bassora’ was reproduced in Principal Navigations by Richard Hakluyt in 1599.

Born at New Buckenham, Norfolk, Eldred travelled to the Levant as a merchant in 1583 - 84 visiting Aleppo, Jerusalem, Gaza and Bethlehem.
