'IN MEMORY OF / THE REVEREND RICHARD MARKS / TWENTY FOUR YEARS VICAR OF THIS PARISH, / WHOSE / SINGULAR AND EVENTFUL HISTORY / RECORDED BY HIS OWN PEN IN THE / "RETROSPECT" / AND VARIOUS OTHER WRITINGS / HAS BEEN MADE A BLESSING TO THOUSANDS / AND WHOSE / HOLY LIFE AND FAITHFUL MINISTRY / WILL LONG BE HAD IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / BY THE FLOCK / TOWHOM HE DECLARED THE WHOLE COUNCIL OF GOD / THIS TABLET IS ERECTED / BY HIS SURVIVING FRIENDS AND PARISHIONERS. / HE WAS BORN AT NORTH CRAWLEY IN THIS COUNTY DEC. 31ST 1778 / AND CLOSED A LIFE OF PIETY, USEFULNESS AND HONOR / IN THIS VILLAGE 22ND MAY 1847'
