'SACRED / to the memory of / Lieut JOHN THEODORE MARSHALL / of H.M. Ship Meleager / and Youngest son of the late Reverend / JOHN MARSHALL / Rector of Orsett in Essex / This Excellent Young man Died of the / Yellow fever on Board the S. Meleager off the / Island of CUBA March the 12th 1808 / AGED 19 YEARS AND 9 MONTHS / of great Promise in his Profession / Exemplary in every Duty / Lamented and beloved by all / 'He being made perfect in a short time / fulfilled a long time' / The unspotted Life is Old age / This STONE is placed to his MEMORY / By his afflicted mother / LOUISA AUGUSTA MARSHALL / the 19th day of October 1808 / Sorrowing but hoping to meet him in the Kingdom of Heaven / Amen'
