'TO THE MEMORY OF THOMAS BOTELER ESQ. COMMANDER R.N. / FIFTH SON OF THE LATE W. BOTELER, OF EASTRY ESQ / WHO HAVING LOST THE GREATER PART OF HIS OFFICERS AND MEN / IN H.M.S. HECLA WHILE ON A SURVEY OF THE WESTERN COAST OF AFRICA / FELL HIMSELF A VICTIM TO THAT PESTILENTIAL CLIMATE. AMIDST DIFFICULTIES WHICH EVEN TO THE LAST, / HIS HIGH SENSE OF DUTY HELD HIM TO RESIST / WITH UNSHAKEN CONSTANCY, FORTITUDE, / AND PERSEVERANCE. / HE DIED OFF THE OLD CALABAR RIVER 28TH NOV. 1829 AGED 32'

Details

Description: On a black marble stele with shallow rectangular feet is a white marble trapezoid with rounded brackets ridged round the edges. An incised frame borders the inscription. A plain cornice supports a shallow pediment with foliated wings at each side and a central coat of arms. The lettering is black filled roman caps. The name of the sculptor is under the base of the tablet. Blazon: (Argent) three escutcheons Sable each charged with a covered cup (Or).
