'TO THE MEMORY OF / CAPTAIN SAWREY TINKLAR. R.M. / WHOSE REMAINS ARE INTERRED IN THE CEMETERY / HE DEPARTED THIS LIFE SEPTEMBER 14th 1840 / WHILST HOLDING THE COMMAND OF THIS ISLAND / IN THE 45th YEAR OF HIS AGE / THIS MONUMENT / IS ERECTED BY THE OFFICERS OF ASCENSION / AND THE SQUADRON ON THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA / AS A TESTIMONY OF THEIR ESTEEM FOR HIS IN LIFE / AND THEIR SORROW FOR HIS DEATH.'
