'Herbert Conrad Wire, late 3rd officer, of the Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamship 'Cadiz' who was drowned during a gale of wind in the China Sea on the 27th July 1860 in the Gallant discharge of his duty aged 22 years. This tablet is erected by the passengers and officers of the ship at that time to commemorate his many noble qualities and record their grief for his loss'
