[Rectangle metal plaque] Nelson’s Tower / This Monument was erected in / 1806 in celebration of Lord / Nelson and his victories. Four / plaques commemorate the / Battle of the Nile 1798, / Copenhagen 1801, Trafalgar / 1805 and that the Tower was built by public subscription / (Architect Charles Stewart). / Built as a meeting place, / viewpoint and landscape / centrepiece, this octagonal / gothic structure contains / three empty rooms. A spiral / stair climbs 70 feet to the / top offering a beautiful / panoramic view over the / Moray Firth area. //

[Round metal plaque] Reopened on / 20 August 1991 by / Cllr. Hilda Cumiskie / following restoration by / Moray District Council / in association with / Historic Scotland. //

Description: Crenelated octagonal tower built in the gothic style, 70 feet (21 mt.) high with a diameter of 24 feet (8 mt.). Interior spiral staircase with three levels. Exterior plaques commemorate Nelson victories at The Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar.

Notes: Restored after a fire in 1900 by John Forrest.

A ‘Trafalgar Club’ was formed by the subscribers to Nelson’s monument in 1807. Members met on the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar - 21 October 1805. Originally the group met at Maclean’s Inn, Forres. Later meetings were held at Nelson’s Tower. The club transferred its assets to Forres Town Council in 1851. The Moray District Council became guardians of the Tower in 1975.

Numerous monuments were erected around the country in Nelson’s memory. Others include Nelson’s Column, Trafalgar Square, London, the Nelson Monument, Carlton Hill, Edinburgh and the Nelson Monument, Exchange Flags, Liverpool.
