'Sacred to the memory of our late shipmate Henry VALENTINE, A.B. of H.M.S. 'Sandpiper' who died on 30th August 1907 aged 20 years. This stone is erected by the officers and crew as a token of esteem', 'Tread lightly on the strangers grave / He came far oer the sea / No mother watched his dying bed / Nor voice said live for me. / Sudden and short his notice was / Messmates and Shipmates mourn, / And long will think upon his name / Gone never to return'
