'SACRED TO THE MEMORY / OF CHARLOTTE CARPENTER / ONLY CHILD OF THE LATE REVEREND ROBERTS / RECTOR OF KENSWORTH IN THE COUNTY OF HERTFORD / AND A RELICT OF THOMAS / SON OF THE LATE REVEREND WILLIAM CARPENTER / OF CHISELBORNE IN THIS COUNTY. SHE DIED ON THE 6TH OF FEBY 1818 AND LIES BURIED / IN THE CHURCHYARD NOT FAR FROM THIS PLACE. / ALSO OF HENRY ROBERTS / ELDEST SON OF THE SAID THOMAS AND CHARLOTTE CARPENTER / AGED ABOUT 14 YEARS / A MIDSHIPMAN ON BOARD HMS SCOUT SLOOP OF WAR / WHICH FOUNDERED AT SEA IN NOVEMBER 1801 ON THE BANKS / OF NEWFOUNDLAND ON HER VOYAGE TO HALIFAX IN NOVA SCOTIA / WHEN ALL HANDS PERISHED. / ALSO OF WILLIAM / THE SECOND SON WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON 17TH NOVEMBER 1797 AGED 8 YEARS / AND OF THREE OTHERS SONS / EDWARD THOMAS GEORGE AND SAMUEL /WHO DIED IN INFANCY. / THE REMAINS OF THE AFORESAID THOMAS CARPENTER / ARE INTERRED IN HIS FAMILY VAULT AT CHISELBORNE. / This tablet is erected in grateful recollection / of the affectionate solicitude for her children / which activated a fond Mother and humble Christian / to the last hours of her existence / by her youngest and only surviving Son / now a field officer in the Madras army and serving in the East Indies. / Bridport December 1851'
